The name "Frozen Charlotte" comes from a popular American folk ballad called “Fair Charlotte,” based on a poem by Seba Smith titled "A Corpse Going to a Ball." It tells the tragic story of a vain young woman named Charlotte who refused to dress warmly for a sleigh ride to a New Year’s Eve ball, despite her mother’s warnings. She wanted to show off her beautiful gown and would not cover it with a cloak. Tragically, Charlotte froze to death on the journey, and her body was only discovered when they arrived.
“He took her hand in his — O, God!
It was as cold as stone;
He tore the mantle from her face,
And the truth to him was known…”
This ballad became widely popular in the 1840s–1860s, and the story stuck in public imagination.
